Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley where the sweeping Bunyoro Escarpment merges into avast, palm-dotted savannah. Gazatted as agame reserve in 1926 and elevated to park status in 1952, it is one of Uganda’s oldest protected areas. It is also the largest. Combined with the contiguous Karuma and Bugungu wild life reserves it covers 5072 sq km, home to 76 species of mammals and over 451 bird species. The Victoria Nile bisects the national park, racing west wards for 80 km over a series of rapids before exploding through a narrow (6m) gap in the remnant rift valley cliffs. This flows quietly across the rift valley floor towards lake Albert.

Murchison falls is the most powerful water fall in the world as described by the explorer Sir Samuel Baker “Upon rounding the corner in our canoes, a magnificent sight suddenly burst upon us.
On either side of the river were beautifully wooded cliffs with rocks jutting out from an intensely green foilage, and rushing through a gap that cliff the rock exactly before us, the river contracted from a grand stream, was pent up in a narrow gorge scarcely fifity yards in width, roaring furiously through the rock- bound pass, it plunged in one leap of about 120 feet perpendicular into dark abyss below. This was the greatest water fall of the Nile and, in honour of the distinquished president of the Royal Geogarphical Society, i named it Murchison Falls, the most important object throughout the course of the river.
