Rising 3,470 meters above the lush landscapes of eastern DRC, Nyiragongo Volcano is a natural wonder unlike any other. Located within Virunga National Park, this active stratovolcano boasts the world’s largest persistent lava lake—a glowing, molten spectacle that draws adventurers from across the globe. Hike to its summit, peer into the fiery crater, and camp under a sky lit by volcanic embers. Nyiragongo is raw, untamed, and unforgettable.
The Nyiragongo Experience
The Trek
- What to Expect: A 5–7 hour ascent through dense forest, rocky trails, and volcanic slopes. The journey starts at Kibati Ranger Post (1,990m) and ends at the crater rim (3,470m).
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging—good fitness is required, but no technical climbing skills are needed. Porters are available to carry gear (£20–£30).
- Reward: Standing at the edge of a 200-meter-wide lava lake, its bubbling surface casting an otherworldly glow. The heat, the sound, the sheer power—it’s a visceral encounter with nature’s fury.
Overnight at the Summit
- Camping: Basic wooden shelters with mattresses are provided at the crater rim. Bring a warm sleeping bag (nights drop to near-freezing) and prepare for a rustic, thrilling night.
- Views: By day, gaze across Lake Kivu and the Rwenzori Mountains; by night, let the lava’s red hue mesmerize you.
Wildlife & Surroundings
- While the trek focuses on the volcano, Virunga’s forests teem with life—monkeys, birds, and, nearby, the famous mountain gorillas. Pair your Nyiragongo hike with a gorilla trek for the ultimate Virunga adventure.
