9 - Day Itinerary
DAY - 1
Arusha to Machame
Up on arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport, you will be received by the company representative who will help you with bags and later transfer you to Machame town south western slopes of mountain Kilimanjaro. You will stay at Kaliwa lodge. You will meet by your climbing manager and mountain guide for full briefing on the Lemosho rout climb and pre check your Equipment.
DAY - 2
Machame , Londorossi gate to Habitat Rain forest
After breakfast, you be driven to the edge of the national park forest at Londorossi gate.The trekking will start through the beautiful rain forest which laces the foot of the mountain. In the afternoon, you will arrive at the lovely forest camp located as the name states, Under big treeHiking time 3-4 hours, Hike distance 4km Habitat Rain Forest /camp altitude 2795m
DAY - 3
Big tree camp to shira camp1
Take your time to walk through the forest ,which boosts plenty of animals and birds, vegetation will be visibly spacer as high altitude plants take over and enter the giant heather moorland zone. The gradient will be relatively steep in the morning, but levels out considerably towards the end of the day, allowing you to enjoy fantastic views of Kilimanjaro western breach. You will arrive at shira camp1 located by a stream on the shira plateau by mid- afternoon
DAY - 4
Shira camp1 to shira camp 2
You will explore the shira plateau enjoying one of the most scenic parts of the trail. This is an easier stroll and is a great acclimatisation day. It is gentle walk east towards the Kibo peak´s glaciered peak across the plateau, which leads to shira camp2 on moorland meadows by a stream. You will have a spectacular view of the final ascent route up to the western beach Hiking Time 5-7 hours/Distance 11km/Habitat Moorland/Camp altitude 3900m
DAY - 5
Shira camp2 -Lava Tower -Barranco Hut
From the Shira plateau you will continue to the east up a ridge passing the junctiontowards the peak of Kibo. As you continue the direction changes to south east towards the lava towers, called the sharks’ tooth. Shortly after the tower, the second junctionwill bring you up to the arrow glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. Continue down to the Barranco hut at an altitude of 13000ft. Although you end the day at almost the sameelevation as when you started (39609) It is an important day is for acclimatisation and will help your body improve your performance and prepare summit day. Hiking Time6-7 hours /Distance 9.9km/Habitat: Semi desert/camp altitude 3950m.
DAY - 6
Barranco camp to Karenga camp
Start early this morning for an amazing challenge a two-hour hike of the Barranco wall, which is daunting but most find it easier to scale than expected with well-placed foot holds and guides on site to help your ascent. Another two to three hours will take you across the glacier valleys where you will camp for the night at Karenga camp. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular with views of the southern glacier valleys and ice fields towering 1000m
Hiking Time 4-5 hours /Distance 5-8km /Habitat: Alpine desert /camp altitude 4,040m
DAY - 7
Karanga Camp to Barafu camp
After breakfast, you leave Karanga camp and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka trail that you will use for the descent. Continue unto the Barafu hut to complete the south circuit, which offers the views of the summit from different angles. The crew will set up your camp. You will have to rest and enjoy the views Barafu camp offers of Mwanza and Kibo peaks. You should go to bed early to gain enough strength for the upcoming summit climb.Hiking Time 3-4 hours/Distance 3-4 km/Habitat Alpine desert/Camp altitude 4,556m
DAY - 8
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak(5895m) – Mweka camp
This is the toughest day with stunning views of Mwanza, Kibo saddles and plains below. A steaming hot drink will arrive very early on this momentous day. Amid night wake up is the start of juggernaut (12-17) hours of trekking. You begin trekking at 1am. The temperatures range from freezing at midnight to between 10 deg f(-12 deg c) to -10deg. F(-23 deg c) just before dawn at the summit. The winding path of endless switch backs, will take form and shape in the shadows of the Ratzel and Rabman glaciers at early dawn and behind you the spires of Mawenzi will be silhouetted against the red glow of the sun beneath the clouds. After about 6 hours of walking, you will come to edge of the crater -Stella point at 5790m of the crater rim is the end of the steep track. From here there is gentle slope about 1 hour to Uhuru peak. After a short time at the summit to celebrate your achievement, descend the steep scree trail back to Barafu Camp for some rest and gain some strength for descent to Mweka camp and this is your last night at the slopes of the roof of Africa. To the summit Hiking Time 7-9 hours/Distance 4-5 km/ Habitat Alpine desert/ Uhuru peak 5895m /To Mweka camp Hiking Time 8-9hours / Distance 12 km/ habitat -Alpine desert / Camp altitude 3170m
DAY - 9
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Machame
After an early and deserved breakfast, it is short 3 hours scenic hike back to the park gate. At Mweka gate you sign your name and details in the register. This is where successful climbers receive their certificates. From Mweka gate you will continue down to Mweka Village, normally muddy 3km (1hr) hike in the Mweka village you will served delicious hot lunch. You will drive back to Kaliwa lodge your hotel in Machame you will have the rest of the day to relax and celebrate your achievements.
